Storm damage can happen in winter or summer.

Unfortunately, nature can also have its destructive side and has its share of both winter and summer storms

In the summer, storms can bring driving rain, heavy winds and even hail, all of which can take a toll on your roof.

When a storm does strike, it’s important to know the signs to look for to determine whether your roof has sustained any damage.

  1. Shingles

The shingles on your roof adhere to each other in order to form one solid, water tight roof deck. Heavy wind and rain can cause dented, torn, curled or missing shingles, which are the most visible sign of storm damage.

The wind and rain can also wear away the protective granules on the surface of shingles, making them less effective at protecting your home from the heat of the sun.

Look for a large pile of granules at the end of your downspout to determine if serious damage occurred.

A small amount of worn off granules is normal and not necessarily a cause for concern.

  1. Gutters, Vents and Windows

Aside from the roofing material itself, gutters, vents and windows can all sustain damage from storms and it may be easier to visually detect this damage than damage to the shingles.

Check for dents to gutters, gable vents and other overhangs and carefully inspect windows for cracks, broken glass, loose weather stripping and torn screens.

  1. Attic and Ceilings

Leaks and water spots in your attic or on ceilings may be a sign that the roof has sustained storm related damage.

Even if your roof looks fine from the outside, there could still be unseen damage that may lead to leaks.

  1. Outside Areas

Check the exterior of your home after a storm for such things as downed tree limbs, missing or damaged fencing, and damage to lawn decorations, mailboxes and other exterior furnishings.

If there is damage to these areas, it’s likely that your roof may have been damaged as well.
