What to do During a Flood in Gypsum

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Each year, more deaths occur because of flooding than any other hazard related to thunderstorms. The most common flood deaths occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous floodwater. Fortunately, during a flood, you can take steps to protect yourself, your family, and your home.

  • Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
  • Listen to a Weather Radio or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions regarding flooding.
  • Evacuate immediately if told to evacuate.
  • Never drive around barricades. Local responders use them to direct traffic out of flooded areas safely.
  • Contact your healthcare provider If you are sick and need medical attention. Wait for further care instructions and shelter in place, if possible. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. Turn-Around. Don't Drown!
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water. Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning.
  • Secure your home. If you have time, bring in outdoor furniture. Move essential items to an upper floor.
  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed. Disconnect electrical appliances. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Stay inside your car if it is trapped in rapidly moving water. Get on the roof if water is rising inside the vehicle.
